Hotel bosses cashing in on Glasgow COP26 summit with three-night stay costing more than the Ritz

Hotel bosses are cashing in on the UN COP26 summit – with a three-night stay in Glasgow during the conference costing more than a room at the Ritz.

Major hotels have sold out of rooms at the time of the summit, which will take place between October 31 and November 12.

World leaders and their officials, delegations from businesses and environmental organisations will attend what is expected to be a landmark climate change conference.

No rooms are left in the Hilton, Radisson, Millennium Hotel and Holiday Inn chains during the first few days.

Beds are available at smaller hotels, hostels and apartments but some owners are charging up to seven times the usual rate.

The Charing Cross Hotel is charging £1609 for a three-night stay – more than the £1380 cost of a room at the Ritz in London.

The Euro Hostel will cost £750, four weeks earlier the same stay would cost the budget traveller £108. The Kelvin Hotel is asking £1020 for three nights when four weeks earlier it would cost just £150.

Apartment and flat rentals are also looking to profit, with the biggest hike in price at VKM Apartments in Pollokshields.

A one-bedroom apartment costs £4645 for three nights, with a two-bedroom apartment costing £6335.

It is more than twice the price of a three-night stay in a suite at the Dorchester in London, which would cost less than £3000.
