Hot take: The government shouldn’t be using ‘Top Gun’ memes

We are living through a simulation of sorts because that’s the only way to describe what is going on. Not only did the President of the United States respond to people peacefully protesting with an AI video of him wearing a crown and dropping feces on them, but the White House response to the pushback has been….somehow worse.

Donald Trump posted a video response to the “No Kings” protests that had him in a fighter jet, dropping AI created poop on people protesting and dressed like a king….so proving their point. But in the video, you can hear Kenny Loggins’ song “Danger Zone,” which was featured in the film Top Gun and subsequently in its sequel, Top Gun: Maverick. Since, Loggins has issued a statement against the use of his music.

“This is an unauthorized use of my performance of ‘Danger Zone.’ Nobody asked me for my permission, which I would have denied, and I request that my recording on this video is removed immediately,” Loggins said in a statement to Variety.

“I can’t imagine why anybody would want their music used or associated with something created with the sole purpose of dividing us. Too many people are trying to tear us apart, and we need to find new ways to come together,” Loggins said. “We’re all Americans, and we’re all patriotic. There is no ‘us and them’ — that’s not who we are, nor is it what we should be. It’s all of us. We’re in this together, and it is my hope that we can embrace music as a way of celebrating and uniting each and every one of us.”

Somehow, it got worse

Loggins response was met with the White House childishly responding to a ask for comment with a…Top Gun meme. According to EW, they reached out to the White House for comment after Loggins’ response. Their answer? A Top Gun picture that said “I Feel the Need For Speed” with Tom Cruise and Anthony Edwards in it.

So instead of responding as a governing body, the White House thought that making a joke about Loggins’ rightful upset was the move….. None of this is okay and it shouldn’t be happening. I don’t want the White House engaging in memes. I don’t want the White House using AI to make bad videos over Americans and their right to a peaceful protest.

All of it is embarrassing and yet here we are time and time again with the Trump administration.
