Feb. 10--The Hot Sardines will bring sounds of big band, swing and jazz during four performances at Costa Mesa's Segerstrom Center for the Arts over Valentine's Day weekend.
The eight-piece ensemble will make its debut at the center Thursday through Sunday with shows at 7:30 nightly.
Each show at the Samueli Theater will feature jazz of the 1920s to '40s, with influences from greats such as Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday and Fats Waller.
Bandleader Evan "Bibs" Palazzo and lead singer Miz Elizabeth -- with their very own tap dancer -- will play "hot jazz" from the Prohibition era to the Depression and World War II.
"The vibe is certainly a retro rediscovery of those great eras," Palazzo said. "This music definitely instills a fun and romantic joy to it."
The Hot Sardines released their self-titled debut album in October 2014. A new album on the Decca/Universal Music Classics label will be launched in June.
The New York-based group has performed at Symphony Hall in Boston in collaboration with the Boston Pops and sold out 15 shows during a residency at Joe's Pub at The Public Theater in Manhattan. That's the nightclub where singers Amy Winehouse and Adele made their U.S. headlining debuts.
