Hot food carry out plan for fire-wrecked social club

Hot food carry out shops are planned for a fire-ravaged social club.

But seven towering trees are at risk of the axe under the scheme for the Barrhead building.

In its glory days as the Columba Social Club it was popular for town weddings, ladies’ nights and bingo.

Eleven months ago it was torched, causing the roof to cave in and sparking a police probe.

New land owner Zubair Malik has extensive interests across Scotland, including Renfrewshire.

He is involved in car washes and businesses including a five-a-side football centre in Aberdeen.

His firm JM Real Estate wants to split the existing building into four and have two carry out eateries, one cafe and an office for finance and professional services.

The entrance off Darnley Road would be widened and car parking spaces increased by five to 25.

Architect drawings reveal the old club will be divided into four, with three of the new units at 1,001 square feet.

A cafe/restaurant is planned for the biggest area, a 2,347 square feet space where the existing main entrance is.

New windows to ground level will be created in all units.

The main building has been empty for around three years and the club never re-opened its doors after a major electrical fault.

It was put up for sale and more recently bought by JM Real Estate.

The club was deliberately set on fire at 3.30am and police said it was wilful, though the culprits were never caught.

Fire crews managed to put flames out before the building was totally destroyed.

As well as the main hall there was a snooker room, meeting room, kitchen and staff area.

The site spans more than 18,500 square feet, but trees are under threat in the current car parking plan before East Renfrewshire Council.

The application will be considered at a later date.
