Unmissable show?
My favourite right now is Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt on Netflix. It’s masterminded by Tina Fey, and I was a big fan of 30 Rock. I like that she’s feminist and I think it’s really important for figures like her to be visible on television. And the rate of jokes is awesome. All of the character’s references come from the early 90s, and expressions that are dorky… I’ll probably finish watching it on tour this week.
Earliest TV memory?
I just remember early morning Saturday kids’ TV. On Channel 4 when I was young – at the point when me and my brother were old enough to get up and very messily make ourselves cereal while my mum was having a well-earned lie-in – there was Trans World Sport, this crazy 70s French [Japanese] cartoon about the human body called Once Upon A Time… Life and The Chart Show. I remember one week the chart would be the Indie Chart and the next it would have the Specialist Dance Chart. Honestly, I hated dance music at that point in my life, I was way more into indie.
TV turn-off?
The Apprentice. For some people it’s awesome to see these gross young capitalists fail and be ripped apart; it’s an orgy of awfulness. But, for me, I don’t want to be reminded that those people exist.
Bring back…
My So-Called Life. I got home from school just in time to watch it when it came out the first time. I rewatched it recently and I still enjoyed it. I had a massive crush on Claire Danes’s character, Angela, and obviously hated the good-looking guy, Jared Leto, who she was obsessed with.
Mastermind specialist subject?
I’m good on graphic novels; I’m really into Alan Moore and when I was a teenager it was Marvel. Moore is just a brilliant cultural figure who’s just super-intelligent and interesting. They’re quite psychedelic and druggy and fantastical. I’ve always found reading that stuff very inspiring because it’s all about good ideas.
