Hot Chip at Bristol's Trinity Centre - review, setlist and pictures

“That was incredible, I can’t believe we just saw Hot Chip in a venue this size,” beams one chap to his mate before the band come back out for the encore.

It’s unlikely he’s the only person in Trinity Centre feeling this way as the veteran indie-electronic group, fronted by Alexis Taylor and Joe Goddard, could easily have sold out a venue three times the size as the reformed Old Market church.

Indeed, they recently announced that they will be back in Bristol in October - playing at the O2 Academy this time - an announcement which came hot on the heels of news that their seventh studio album, A Bath Full of Ecstasy, will be released in June.

And the buzzing Trinity Centre crowd are treated to three songs from the forthcoming album, including the brilliant first release from it, Hungry Child, and Melody of Love, which shows off a different side to the five-piece, who grow to become a seven-piece when on the road.

Those two tracks are sandwiched by 2012 hit Flutes from In Our Heads, which proves to be one of the set’s standout inclusions with its slow-building nature sounding even better live than it does on record.

As it builds to a crescendo, all seven band members stand in a line at the front of the stage to show off their dance moves, much to the crowd’s delight.

On Boy From School, arguably one of their finest ever releases, they demonstrate their astounding ability on their respective instruments, slowing down the tempo gradually before building it back up to full pelt - a trick which sends the crowd into frenzy.

The unmistakable intro to Ready For The Floor takes things up yet another notch but it’s nothing compared to the reception that Over And Over receives to finish the set.

Virtually everyone in the crowd is singing along to the hugely infectious chorus, which is probably the first lyric most people think of when Hot Chip come into conversation, and with a set jam-packed with absolute bangers it’s no wonder there’s a rapturous call for more tunes.

They oblige and the first song of the encore is a cover of Beastie Boys’ Sabotage, which surely very few would have seen coming.

It sounds absolutely superb and further demonstrates Hot Chip’s forward-thinking approach and ability to throw one hell of a party.

It’s followed by the synth-heavy I Feel Better, which ensures everyone leaves on a massive high as they head out to Bristol’s various bars and clubs.
