TWO workers have escaped after a Cardiff bakery caught fire in the early hours of Monday.
Cardiff Fire and Rescue crews were called to a premises off Main Road and Harrison Street about 1.20am, with heavy smoke visibile as they made their way to the scene.
Firefighters said they arrived to find a hot bread shop well alight, donning breathing apparatus and gaining entry to attack the flames with a fully-charged hose.
"Luckily two workers that were inside the premises, along with residents that live above and in surrounding buildings had self evacuated before fire crews' arrival," Cardiff Fire and Rescue said in a statement.
Crews from Wallsend and Charlestown joined to help fight the blaze, which was upgraded to a second alarm blaze due to the risk it could spread into premises above the shop.
Firefighters drew water from the nearby shopping centre's fire protection system as they battled the blaze, with reinforcements joining the effort from Lambton, Mayfield West and Teralba.
"Crews gained access to adjoining premises with entry tools and techniques to ensure their was no fire spread and to contain the fire to the bakery below," firefighters said in a statement.
They continued to bombard the building with water from above to keep it out of the roof, eventually containing the blaze to the original premises after more than two hours.
Fire and Rescue NSW said the bakery itself was totally destroyed.
