TOCHIGI -- Hot-air balloon pilots showed their skills during a competition for the most accurate handling of balloons at a flood control basin in Tochigi on Friday.
The nation's top balloon pilots joined the 2020 Watarase balloon race at the Watarase Yusuichi flood control basin. When the national championship competition started at 6:50 a.m., 28 colorful balloons of various patterns, such as checkered or striped, slowly rose into the sky.
The competition requires them to drop sandbags as closely as possible to a target point. Participants compete to show their precision skills in handling the burners and their ability to catch the wind. The competition will be held until Monday.
