Japan upset France 4-0 in its pool-play opener in 5-on-5 blind soccer at the Tokyo Paralympics on Sunday.

Japan took a 3-0 lead in the first half behind a pair of goals from 42-year-old Tomonari Kuroda, and widened its advantage after the break on a penalty kick from captain Ryo Kawamura.

Japan, which qualified for the Paralympics for the first time because it is the host nation, next faces four-time defending-champion Brazil on Monday in its second match in pool play.

The sport features four position players, excluding the goalkeeper, who wear eye masks. The balls contain metal granules that jingle when they roll.

The Paralympic tournament includes eight teams that compete in two groups in pool play with the top two squads from each group advancing to the semifinals.
