SCOTLAND is ready to celebrate the winners of this year’s Daily Record and Bòrd na Gàidhlig Gaelic Awards at a virtual ceremony next month.
These awards pay tribute to all aspects of Gaelic culture, education and language and judges have been inundated with inspiring stories of people and organisations keeping the language at the forefront of people’s lives.
Finalists have been chosen across a range of areas including an Innovation During Lockdown category, where finalists include FC Sonas, who encouraged kids and young people to continue to develop their Gaelic skills in a community setting.
Joy Dunlop created Covid Choral Workshops as a way of sustaining Gaelic choral singing during the pandemic and Mary Ann Kennedy and mother Kenna Campbell maintained contact despite 100 miles between them – while translating CS Lewis’s The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe into Gaelic.
Celebrating Gaelic culture, education and language, this year’s awards also recognise the way young people are keeping the language relevant, including Lauren Ferguson who entertains people on social media with her make-up talent and Robbie MacLeod who provides a weekly stream on gamer social media platform Twitch, delivering over 30 hours of new Gaelic-language content since lockdown began.
This year the Gaelic Awards, now in their eighth year, will be a virtual event with Scottish broadcaster and producer Cathy MacDonald returning as host.
She said: “I am delighted to be part of an event that celebrates cultural and linguistic pride, both at home and abroad, and that covers such a diverse demographic.
