Hospital trust apologises after great-grandad dies following fall from window

A hospital trust has apologised to the family of a pensioner who died after falling from a window.

Edward Cockburn, 82, was in Sunderland Royal Hospital receiving treatment for pneumonia when he left the ward where he was receiving treatment.

The great-grandad then fell from a second-floor window and suffered extensive injuries after leaving the ward he was on.

Mr Cockburn was rushed to Newcastle Royal Infirmary for treatment but tragically died 10 days later on March 25.

An investigation was launched by the South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust.

Now the trust has apologised to Mr Cockburn’s family as the investigation continues.

Melanie Johnson, Executive Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Our sincere apologies and condolences go out to Mr Cockburn’s family at this very sad time.

“We are carrying out a full and thorough investigation into what happened. We are in close contact with the family and will share our findings with them as soon as we are able to.”
