Hospital staff on alert for man banned from every NHS building in the UK

Hospital workers are being warned about a patient who has faked a variety of serious illnesses to receive treatment, food and a bed.

Homeless man Christopher Dearlove, who has more than 70 aliases, has been described as the "UK's most prolific hospital hopper" and was given a criminal ASBO banning him from every NHS building in England and Wales .

A previous court hearing in 2017, where he had breached the ASBO, stated that the 63-year-old once coughed on nurses after claiming he had just returned from West Africa where his wife had died from the deadly Ebola virus.

Medics donned protective clothing and masks and A&E came to a standstill.

A court also heard how he tricked staff into thinking he was a haemophiliac with AIDS and coughed up fake blood to get a room to himself.

He is thought to have cost the NHS thousands of pounds through his actions, reports Wales Online.

Despite the ASBO and a jail sentence of 14 months, a new "risk alert" has been issued to hospital staff in some areas of the UK including Wales, including medics at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

It urges staff to call 999 immediately if they see Dearlove, who also goes by the names Gary Wainwright, Gary Lampard, Gary Ryan and Gary Fowler.

The alert added that the man is now a "prolific offender" at hospitals along the M4 corridor.

The NHS Counter Fraud Service (CFS) Wales stated that the first risk alert on Dearlove abusing NHS services was issued on January 4, 2018.

A spokesman added: "We are currently collating information on the subject's attendances at NHS hospitals in England and Wales, with the intention of taking appropriate preventative action to protect NHS resources."
