Peterborough hospital put on lockdown after 'multiple people assaulted with weapons'

A hospital was on lockdown after several people were assaulted with weapons nearby.

Peterborough City Hospital was braced following the incident this morning.

Police have closed a number of roads in and around the town following the incident, Cambridge News reported.

There are currently multiple police vehicles and ambulances on a road close to the hospital.

Several roads have been closed off by officers while they deal with the reports of voilence.

Officers from Cambridgeshire police were called to the scene at 10.35am this morning with reports that a number of people had been assaulted and weapons had been used.

A spokeswoman for North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Peterborough City Hospital, said: “We activated our lockdown procedure at just after 11am today as a precautionary measure following information from Cambridgeshire Police.

“There was an initial delay for patients coming for appointments being granted access to the building, but this is now resolved.

“As this is an ongoing police matter, we are unable to comment any further.”

At 1.44pm the hospital announced that the lockdown had been lifted.

The force have said it is not clear how many people have been injured and the severity of any such injuries.

People are being advised to avoid the area if they can.

A spokeswoman for Cambridgeshire police said: “A section of Welland Road has been closed near to the junction with Cedar Grove following reports of violence in Dogsthorpe.

“We were called at 10.35am this morning (Thursday May 21) with reports that a number of people had been assaulted and weapons had been used.

“The incident is very much ongoing at this stage. It is not clear how many people have been injured and the severity of any such injuries."

They added: “Peterborough City Hospital is currently locked down in connection with this incident.”
