Hospital numbers reach level last seen in March as 1,358 Covid cases reported today

Irish health officials have today reported 1,358 new cases in Ireland over the last 24 hours.

400 people are in hospital being treated, which is the highest number reported since March - at the height of the pandemic.

Of this number, 75 are currently in the ICU.

The five-day moving average sits at 1,578.

Meanwhile, despite high case numbers, the plan remains for the next easing of restrictions next week.

The return of nightclubs and other late night venues will be welcomed by many, as well as the end to the requirement of social distancing as we move as close to normal life as possible for the time being.

As the big day approaches, a number of hints have been given by officials about exactly what we can expect.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin confirmed that we "are on track" to lift all rules but the requirement for masks will remain in healthcare settings, indoor retail and on public transport.

Another announcement before the official easing will come on October 20, and will lay out the exact plan for Friday, 22 onwards - with some additional rules expected for nightclubs.

"We'll look at the issue of vaccination on that but we'll make a further announcement closer to the 20th," the Taoiseach said.

For now, the advice states that the following restrictions will be lifted:

  • rules around social distancing
  • mask wearing outdoors and in indoor private settings
  • limits on attendees at indoor and outdoor events and activities
  • rules around religious and civil ceremonies
  • limits on the number of people meeting in indoor private homes and gardens
  • the need for the Covid Cert for access to any activities or events - with the exception of international travel
  • restrictions on activities deemed high-risk, like nightclubs
