Hospital floor evacuated after 'smell of burning' sparks fire response

The first floor of the Liverpool Women’s Hospital has been evacuated after the smell of burning was detected.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue said the measure was taken as a precaution considering the nature of the building.

Three fire engines were on the scene in minutes after the alert was received at 12.14pm today.

Despite the smell of burning being reported, no visible sign of fire has yet been detected.

The fire service said the smell could have come from an overheated light fitting, however, crews are still checking around the roof void of the building.

It is not believed that there is any serious cause for concern around the building but crews are currently still on scene as investigations continue.
