Hospital bus driver who was 'very well-known and popular' dies after contracting coronavirus

Tributes have been paid to a popular member of staff at Bristol's hospitals - who has died from coronavirus this week.

Carlton Moyston had worked for years as one of the drivers of the free hospital bus that went from Temple Meads and the city centre to the Bristol Royal Infirmary and other hospital sites.

The 61-year-old contracted coronavirus, and died in intensive care at the BRI on Tuesday, June 23 after a long battle with the virus.

He joined the hospital staff in 1998, first as a security officer, before moving onto the transport team driving the bus and transport lorries.

The father and grandfather was affectionately known as 'Tiny' by his colleagues, and was popular in the transport team and well-known and loved throughout the University Hospitals trust sites.

He had received many commendations for his work, often going above and beyond in the way he cared for the people he transported around the city.

The chief executive of University Hospitals Bristol and Weston trust, Robert Woolley, said: "It gives me great sadness to announce that Carlton Moyston, one of our transport drivers based at our hospitals in Bristol, has died."

“Carlton was a very well-known and popular member of staff who started working for the Trust in October 1998 as a security officer before becoming a transport driver, which saw him drive the hospital free bus and transport lorries.

“On behalf of everyone at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust, including our patients and the communities we serve, I would like to offer my sincerest condolences to his family.

“Carlton will be greatly missed and we are ensuring that staff have access to support to help them at this difficult time," he added.

Carlton's tragic death was the most recent recorded death from coronavirus Covid-19 at the BRI, and takes the total number of people who have died with the virus within Bristol and Weston's hospitals to 267.

Of those, 145 have been at hospitals run by the UHBW Trust, 119 at North Bristol's Southmead Hospital and three at Weston General before it merged with UHB and its Covid-19 deaths were counted as part of the UHBW.
