Horsforth residents urged to attend housing plans meeting

Horsforth residents are being urged to attend a public meeting over plans for 550 homes which councillors claim could change the character of the town.

Developers are hoping to build the family homes on the sites of the former Clariant Works on Calverley Lane and the Riverside Mills on Low Hall Road.

But their proposals have drawn widespread concern about pressures on local infrastructure such as roads, schools and primary health care services.

The public meeting is being held at St Margaret's Church Hall, Horsforth, on Friday 22 October at 6.30pm. Officers from Leeds highways and planning departments will be present to answer questions.

Speaking of the development, Horsforth Liberal Democrat councillor Andy Barker said:

"I want to encourage all local residents to tell the council what they think of these plans. Send a letter or email to the council, or visit the public meeting we have arranged.

"As councillors we have concerns. We are worried about the increase in traffic, the ring road is busy enough as it is.

"I also have concerns about our local schools. 550 new family homes will mean our schools will struggle with capacity."

Brian Cleasby - a Horsforth Liberal Democrat councillor - recently said traffic on the ring road around Horsforth could be grid-locked, if plans for the major new housing development came to fruition.

The planning applications can be found on Leeds council's website.
