Horses trapped on an island with rising flood water in Kidwelly

A number of horses are surrounded by rising flood water in a field in Carmarthenshire .

A total of 14 horses have been seen in a field off Capel Teilo Road, in the Kidwelly area, surrounded by water after the recent heavy rainfall.

Images taken by passersby have captured them huddled together on an island with the high water surrounding them.

While drone footage shows just how badly flood damaged the field is as some of the horses have been separated by the rising water.

Denise Phillips, from Bancyfelin, who saw the horses in the field, said: "The place gets really badly flooded.

"This started on Sunday when the heavy rain started and the weather forecast says that more is coming in on Thursday night.

"There are 14 horses in the field, three of which are foals. Two of the horses are separated from the others and they look safer than the other 12.

"The fire brigade were called out on Sunday and we reported it to the RSPCA ."

Another passerby, who did not want to be named, claimed that there are only "one or two high spots" for the horses to escape the water.

The onlooker said: "The horses are in an area that floods badly as they are in a field with a river running through the middle of it.

"They were surrounded by deep water. One of the foals I saw was lying down and it doesn't look very safe.

"There are only one or two high spots for them."

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service sent a crew from Kidwelly to the scene on Sunday morning after receiving a call regarding the horses.

A spokesman said: "We were called to a report of a horse up to its neck in water on Sunday, September 29 at 11.21am.

"It was classed as a false alarm as all horses were on high ground when we got there.

"We sent a crew from Kidwelly and we left the scene at 1.51pm."

A spokeswoman for RSPCA Cymru said if anyone had further concerns about the horses, they should call their 24-hour helpline on 0300 123 4999.
