Horses see traffic completely stopped on busy stretch of M5

Police had to halt traffic on a busy stretch of the M5 – to move a pair of police horses from the hard shoulder.

The two horses, called Quantock and Windsor, had to be escorted onto the carriageway after the horsebox they were travelling in broke down on the northbound carriageway near Weston-super-Mare yesterday.

Traffic on the motorway was held briefly while officers from Avon and Somerset Police Horse team moved the animals into another vehicle.

Avon and Somerset Police's horses team tweeted to apologise for the delay caused to motorists but thanking them for their patience while the procedure was carried out.

The police Twitter account said: "Sorry for any inconvenience caused on the M5 earlier - we had an issue with our lorry."Traffic was temporarily stopped to keep Quantock, Windsor and officers safe while we transferred them.

“Thank you for your patience."Highways England also reported an issue with motorway traffic as a result of a broken-down horsebox on the hard shoulder.

“We had to stop traffic for a horse transfer due to a broken down horsebox on the hard shoulder.”
