Horses arrive at Newcastle Racecourse as live sport returns to the North East

Newcastle Racecourse is hosting the first meeting since the sport was stopped in its tracks by the Covid-19 crisis.

It's the first competitive racing anywhere since March - but it's going to be very different to how fans will remember it.

Vans transporting horses were spotted outside the course on Monday morning, but they didn't need to navigate any queues of well-heeled punters waiting to get it in.

Instead, they arrived at a largely empty racecourse and were slowly led in by drivers clad in masks, a visible reminder that this is no ordinary race day.

There will be no bookies, no bars and no spectators - just the horses, their trainers and essential staff.

Jockeys also need to be tested for the coronavirus ahead of the meeting and owners may not even be allowed in because of strict social-distancing measures.

Racing was set to get under way at 1pm with a packed schedule of 10 races throughout the afternoon.

The day's proceedings are being televised live on Sky Racing and the event will come as a relief to bookmakers.

Disruption to the sporting calendar has hit the betting industry hard but high street branches will be allowed to being reopening from June 15.
