One of Adelaide's major freeways was closed to outbound traffic on Sunday after a horse fell off its float and onto the road.

SA Police said officers attended the incident near Stirling, on the South Eastern Freeway, just after midday.

A spokesperson said the incident happened just past the Crafers exit.

The spokesperson said officers and a vet attended the scene to euthanase the animal.

Motorists planning to travel along the eastbound lanes were advised to take an alternate route while authorities were at the scene, but the road has since reopened.

Man robs chemist at Salisbury North

Meanwhile, police are searching for a man who was allegedly involved in an armed robbery at a pharmacy north of Adelaide.

In a statement, SA Police said the man entered the pharmacy on Bagster Road, Salisbury North, allegedly armed with a firearm, on Sunday morning.

Police said staff handed over "a small amount of money" to the man when he produced a gun, before he left the building, walking south-east on Shrewton Court.

He is described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 188 centimetres tall and with a slim build.

At the time of the incident, he was wearing a beige, hooded jumper with a tea towel over his face, dark grey pants and black shoes.

Police said he was also in possession of a black, cross-body bag that contained "a possible firearm wrapped in material".

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
