Horse set on fire by thugs in North Dublin on road to recovery after 'completely' shutting down due to pain

The horse cruelly set alight by a pair of callous thugs in North Dublin "completely shut down" when he was rescued - but he is now taking his first steps on his road to recovery.

The horse, who has been named Pilgrim by the DSPCA, was led into a garden before being doused in a liquid and set on fire in the early hours of Tuesday morning in Darndale.

Poor Pilgrim suffered severe burns to his face, neck, body, mane, and eyelashes.

The sickening scars can be seen in full in the video the DSPCA released of Pilgrim - which, thankfully, shows him eating and drinking as he slowly gets back on his feet.

The animal charity confirmed he is receiving round the clock veterinary care after arriving into the Rescue Centre "completely shut down" from the pain.

And though Pilgrim has a long road ahead of him, they say he is a fighter and will hopefully make a full recovery.

"Thank you to everybody that got in touch enquiring about the stallion that came into our animal shelter yesterday suffering from burns to his face and body," they commented.

"We have called him Pilgrim.

"Pilgrim has suffered a horrendous shock and major trauma. When he came into our shelter yesterday he was in pain and completely shut down.

"He is currently receiving veterinary care round the clock to treat his wounds and relieve the pain he is suffering.

"Pilgrim will get all the help that he needs but he has a long road ahead of him. Thankfully his spirit is strong and he is a fighter.

"Today he showed goods signs of improvement and is eating and drinking well. A positive first few steps in his rehabilitation.

"We are overwhelmed with all the offers of help and kindness that has been shown.

"Pilgrim has the most wonderful temperament and it is difficult to understand the cruelty that he has suffered.

"But now he is in a good place and we are hopeful that he will make a full recovery."
