Horse rescued by fire crews after falling into ditch in Gateshead

Fire crews rescued a horse after it fell into a ditch in Gateshead.

Shanoo fell into a ditch at Bowes Manor Equestrian Centre in Birtley and was found by another horse owner on Friday morning.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service were called to the scene to help carry out the delicate rescue mission.

Crews from Gateshead were first on the scene before specialist animal rescue crews from South Shields and Hebburn arrived.

They used rescue strops to manoeuvre the 24-year-old horse, who was anaesthetised by a vet, so crews could get him out of the ditch.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "An onsite telehandler assisted to lift Shanoo to his feet where he regained his stability."
