Horse rescued by fire crews after falling into cesspit

Firefighters were called to a Nottinghamshire village after a horse fell into a dry cesspit.

Three crews attended the incident in Mattersey alongside a local vet company, which supplied "much-need machinery" to lift the animal out.

Pictures from fire station manager Leigh Holmes shows the horse was strapped and lifted by its hooves out of the hole it had fallen in to.

The rescue took place on Friday afternoon (March 27) and the horse was successfully put upright and back with its owner.

Mr Holmes, who is also district manager for Newark, Collingham and Southwell, tweeted: "A difficult but very successful rescue of a large animal (horse) this afternoon by crews from Retford, Warsop and Newark.

"This was made possible through the excellent support of a vet and local company Agriscope who sent us some much needed machinery."

A spokeswoman for Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "On 27 March 2020 at 12:57 we received a call of a horse falling in a dry cesspit. Crews from Retford, Newark and Warsop attended.

"The horse was rescued and left in the care of the owner with the incident being concluded at 15:40."
