Horse racing ante-post betting 'very quiet' during lockdown

Bookies report ante-post betting has been "very quiet" since horse racing went into lockdown a number of weeks ago.

Racing could be one of the first sports to return both in both Ireland and the UK, with action set to take place behind closed doors.

Horse Racing Ireland chief executive Brian Kavanagh has sought clarification from Taoiseach Leo Varadkar as to when the sport can resume here as the roadmap published by the government last week didn't clearly state when it could.

Mr Varadkar’s plans include permitting the “return of outdoor workers” and for “people to engage in outdoor sporting activities” in phase one, scheduled for May 16, but provisions for “behind closed doors sporting activities” are schemed for phase three, due to begin on June 29.

Meanwhile, reports today suggest that racing could return in the UK on May 15 - but it remains to be seen if overseas trained horses will be allowed to compete in races.

Despite being starved of racing action in recent weeks, punters have been unwilling to get involved in ante-post punting.

Nicola McGeady from Ladbrokes said: "Unsurprisingly punters are keeping their powder dry until there is more clarity with regards the sporting calendar.

"There are so many questions yet to be answered especially when it comes to horse racing and if horses can travel from overseas etc."

She added: "Hopefully with racing due to come back this month, we will see more interest."
