Horse put down after crash with van in County Durham

A horse had to be put down after a crash in County Durham.

The collision took place on Edge Lane, in Burnhope, on Thursday morning.

Durham police said they received reports of two horses loose on the road and they found that a van had collided with one of them.

The driver was not injured and one of the animals was also unharmed. However, the other horse suffered leg injuries and had to be put down.

A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary added: "We were called to reports of two horses loose in Edge Lane, Burnhope, just before 5.30am on Thursday morning.

"A van collided with one of the horses, leaving it with leg injuries. The driver is believed to have been uninjured.

"Officers closed the road and a vet was called to assess the horse’s injuries. Unfortunately it had to be put down at the scene.

"The other horse was uninjured and recovered by its owner."

The road, between Holmside Lane and A6076 Lanchester Road, was closed while emergency services were at the scene.

It was reopened just after 8am.
