Horse injured following reports of animals being raced on A-road

A horse was left injured following reports of "horse racing" on an A-road on Saturday.

A spokesperson from RSPCA said a horse has been placed in their car after they were called to a road near Abergavenny on Saturday evening.

Locals reported an alleged "horse race" having took place on the A40, near Gilwern, after nearby field was allegedly occupied by travellers.

One local resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, said on Saturday morning, around 50 vans occupied a field between Llangattock and Gilwern.

They said: "While on a community litter pick on Saturday, members noticed that a field had become occupied by around 50 vans, which included food vans.

"We heard that a wedding was supposed to be taking place on Sunday, and that some of the people had travelled from Ireland.

"The issue I have here is the gathering, we have been told by police to report raves and the rest, but they knew about this and said they could not do anything.

"Not only that, people would have travelled more than five miles."

By Sunday morning the field was empty apart from large industrial waste bins and a small amount of portable toilets.

Another local resident reported that a horse race had taken place between Abergavenny, Gilwern and Crickhowell. They said they a small horse had been injured in the accident.

A spokesperson for RSPCA said: "We were called to assist Gwent Police yesterday following concerns for a horse injured on a road near Abergavenny.

"The police removed the horse and placed her into our care. Anyone with any information can contact us in complete confidence by calling 0300 1234 999."

A spokeswoman for Gwent Police said: "Whilst travelling through the Gilwern area there were concerns for the welfare of one of the horses that had collapsed, members of the public assisted officers in getting it back on its feet and the RSPCA was called.

"The horse is now in the care of the RSPCA."

A spokeswoman from Dyfed-Powys Police added: “A gathering of people with horses took place in a field near Llangattock over the weekend with over 100 people estimated to be in attendance on Saturday.

"A ‘parade’ took place with a number of horses which travelled from Llangattock and along the A40 to Abergavenny. In the interests of safety, Dyfed-Powys Police escorted the group to Abergavenny.

"Many later returned to the field in Llangattock with the majority leaving the area by Saturday evening.

"Officers present did not witness any racing and Dyfed-Powys Police is unaware of any wedding taking place.”
