The road was closed for approximately two hours while officers dealt with the incident.

Lisa Lanfear, equine welfare officer for charity Communities for Horses said: “We were contacted by someone about this incident, but we were aware police had closed the road and we would have difficulty accessing the site.

“We believe the horse was wearing a head collar and had a lead rope attached, which suggests it became loose in transit.

“I spoke an individual was travelling on the bridge and stopped to assist and he was devastated".

A South Wales Police spokesman added: "We were called following reports that a horse had fallen from a moving horse box and was laying in the road.

"To prevent any further suffering for the horse which had catastrophic injuries, the decision was taken to euthanize the animal at the scene.

"The road was closed for a couple of hours until the horse could be recovered by South Wales Traffic Trunk Road Agency".

Anyone with concerns about equine welfare can contact the registered charity Communities for Horses on 07563 067478.
