Horror three-car crash on M73 and M8 lane closed as drivers face icy blast on Scotland's roads

Three vehicles have collided closing a major Scots motorway amid a spate of crashes as drivers battle the ice on the first Monday of the year.

Emergency services are racing to the scene at the M73 which is closed southbound just before junction 2a at 6.47am.

A Police Scotland spokesman told the Record that three vehicles had crashed.

It is unclear if there are injuries or what the vehicles are at this time.

Meanwhile a lane of the M8 remains closed after a crash near to junction 8 at 6.55am.

Lane three has been closed while the other two remain running.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We were called around 6.35 am on Monday, 4 January, to a report of a two car crash on the M8, eastbound, near junction 7, Eurocentral.

"Both vehicles are being recovered and the road is not closed."

An earlier crash on the M90 has now been cleared with the road reopened both ways.

The Met Office has issued a yellow ice warning for large parts of the eastern UK, including much of Scotland.

The body has warned that "Icy patches may cause some tricky travel conditions" and to expect "Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces" and "Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths."

Plunging temperatures have lead to snow being seen in many parts of the country.

There has already been tragedy on the roads this weekend after the death of a 23-year-old man at the the A93 Spittal of Glenshee in Perth and Kinross on Saturday.
