A 25-year-old British tourist has died after falling from a hotel balcony in a popular tourist area of Malta.
Emergency services rushed to the Cavalieri Art Hotel in St Julian early on Friday morning, where they found the man’s body on the ground outside the building. A medical team was called to the scene on Triq Spinola, on the island’s eastern coast, but the Welshman was pronounced dead shortly after.
Preliminary investigations suggest the man fell from the balcony at around 4.15am.
The road outside the hotel was briefly closed as police and emergency crews worked at the scene before removing the body. The hotel was operating as usual by around 9am, according to local reports. Malta Police have confirmed that an investigation is ongoing.
The Times of Malta confirmed the incident occurred at the Cavalieri Art Hotel. The deceased man is believed to be from Gwynedd, in north Wales.
The tragedy has prompted an outpouring of sympathy from politicians in the young man’s local community.
Sian Gwenllian, the Member of the Senedd for Arfon, said: “News of the death of a 25-year-old from Gwynedd in Malta is truly devastating.
“The pain his family must be experiencing is unimaginable. My thoughts, and those of the people of Gwynedd, are with them in their grief.”
Fellow Welsh MP Liz Saville Roberts, who represents Dwyfor Meirionnydd, added: “Heartbreaking news. My heart goes out to the young man's family at this extremely difficult time.”
A spokesperson for the Foreign Office said: “We are in contact with the local authorities regarding the death of a British man in Malta.”
