Horror Easter weekend for Irish families sees two dead and several injured as gardai attend assaults and crashes

The Easter Bank Holiday has proven to be a horror weekend for many with gardai reporting numerous tragic accidents and physical attacks nationwide.

Across Friday, Saturday and Sunday, a woman was killed in Northern Ireland, and three people were attacked elsewhere around the country - one of whom sadly passed away while another is fighting for his life in hospital.

Meanwhile, a number of crashes occurred on Irish roads nationwide, most recently, five people had to be rushed to hospital in Waterford after an Easter Sunday collision.

Amid the increase in violence, many are calling for increased garda presence online and harsher sanctions for those involved.

Friday, April 15

Limerick attack

Gardai launched a probe into the death of a man in Limerick City on Friday night after he was assaulted on the street.

Officers and emergency services rushed to the scene at around 10.25pm where a man in his 40s was discovered with serious injuries on Parnell Street.

He was taken to University Hospital Limerick for treatment but later passed away.

The scene was currently preserved to allow for a technical examination to take place.

Meanwhile, the Office of the State Pathologist has been notified and a post-mortem was conducted.

Gardaí are continuing to investigate all the circumstances surrounding the fatal assault and have asked for anyone that may have been in the Parnell Street, Lord Edward Street, and Davis Street areas of Limerick last night, between 10:00 pm and 10:40 pm to come forward.

Saturday, April 16

Antrim murder

On Saturday, PSNI officers launched an investigation after a woman was found dead at a property in Co Antrim that evening.

They were called to the scene at around 6:10 pm in the Victoria Avenue area of Whitehead after being informed that a woman, who was revealed to be a former nurse, had been stabbed.

Emergency services attended the incident, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

A man has since been arrested and remains in police custody, and police say “At this stage, we are not looking for any other suspects.”

Donegal attack

Elsewhere, a young man is fighting for his life after an assault in Co Donegal on Saturday night.

The man, who is in his 20s, was attacked in the Emmet Park area of Castlefin just before midnight.

Another man in his 30s was arrested at the scene and is being questioned at Letterkenny Garda Station.

A Garda spokesperson said “Gardaí are investigating an alleged assault which occurred before midnight at a residence in the Castlefin area of Donegal on Saturday, 16th April 2022.

“A man (20s) was later taken to Letterkenny University Hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

“Gardaí have arrested a man (30s) in connection with this incident. He is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Letterkenny Garda Station.”

Sunday, April 17

Dublin attack

A young man remains in a critical condition in hospital after a vicious attack in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The victim suffered serious head injuries after being punched during the attack, which occurred at around 2.30 am on Dublin's D’Olier Street, near the junction with Fleet Street.

Gardai rushed to the scene where emergency services treated the 20-year-old before removing him by ambulance to St James’s Hospital.

Officers carried out a follow-up search under warrant at a house in Kildare and a man in his 30s was arrested and was being quizzed about the incident today.

The suspect was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at Pearse Street Garda Station, while a forensic examination was carried out at the scene.

He has since been charged and appeared before the Criminal Courts of Justice this morning.

Meath crash

Meanwhile, another young man is being treated in hospital after being struck down by a car in Co Meath early on Sunday morning.

According to a garda report, at around 1:30 am, the 20-year-old was hit by a car on the R161 Trim Road near Balreask Cross.

He was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda for treatment, where he remains.

It is understood that his injuries are serious and that the driver of the vehicle involved in the collision was unharmed.

Waterford crash

Gardai today confirmed that five people had to be taken to hospital after a serious crash in Waterford.

Two cars collided on the N25 near Ballyduff East just after 4:00 pm on Sunday.

The driver of one of these vehicles, a woman aged in her 40s, was taken to Waterford University Hospital.

Gardai say she is currently in a serious but stable condition.

A male teenager, a passenger in the car, was also taken to Waterford Hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The driver of the second car, a man in his 70s, and two passengers, a man (50s) and a woman (50s) were taken to Cork and Waterford University Hospitals, where they are in a serious but stable condition.
