Horror 'attempted child abduction' as brave community report leads to swift arrest

A man has been arrested following an alleged child abduction attempt in Co Armagh on Wednesday afternoon.

Police in the North responded to the call after receiving a report from a member of the public in the Brookehill area of Lurgan who expressed concern.

The child is reported to be in a shocked state following the incident, however they were not injured or physically hurt and police have expressed that they will be ramping up patrols in the area as a consequence, Belfast Live reported.

Speaking about the incident to Belfast Live, PSNI Inspector McCullough informed that local response officers acted "swiftly" when they received a report from the "very concerned" member of the public.

"I would like to commend the reporting party and other members of the local community for their quick actions, which thankfully saw the child returned to its mother," he said.

He stressed that "although shaken" the child is no longer in harms way and was not hurt in the incident.

"I want to reassure locals that we take all reports of this nature extremely seriously. We have been liaising with community representatives to allay any concerns and will be increasing proactive patrols in the area," Insp McCullough said.

The PSNI has urged anyone who has any concerns around suspicious behaviour in their area to report them to police on 101 immediately, or 999 in an emergency.

"Our investigation into this incident has begun. The arrested man remains in police custody at this time," Insp McCullough added.
