Devastated staff at a popular Kilwinning nursery say they are "heartbroken" after vandals carried out a late night raid on their new garden area.
The team of Rainbow Childcare in the town's Howgate couldn't believe it when they found the new garden area had been ransacked, toys broken and glass everywhere.
They say the only way they can cope with the heartache is to take comfort in the knowledge that the attack could have been worse if the mindless vandals had succeeded in setting fire to the grass of the garden.
And thankfully Jim Frew, affectionately knows as Papa Jim to generations of children, was the first to discover what had happened, giving the team to clear up before nursery on Monday morning.
Caroline Frew Greenan of Rainbow Childcare said: "We are utterly devastated to see the vandalism that has been done to our nursery garden.
"Broken glass, graffiti and just chaos but what is more worrying was that while the mess was being cleaned up we found scorch marks in areas and matches so it could have been much worse.
"Thankfully Papa Jim Frew discovered it today before the children return on Monday.
"We have cleared the worst of the mess so that the children did not see it and we will have our garden back to normal by Tuesday.
"Thankfully, the children will be able to access our two to three garden so we will still be having outdoor fun."
Siobhan Davidson of Rainbow Childcare added: "The children love their gardens, they have put a lot of hard work into this and it is this kind of mindless attack that makes no sense to any of us."
