Horror as mum-of-two opens cat food filled with flies which went on to infest house

A mum-of-two has described the horrifying moment she opened a packet of cat food filled with flies which went on to infest her home.

Sally Higgins has spent in excess of of £20 on fly-killing spray after she purchased a packet of pet food infested with flies from a Bingham supermarket.

The mum told Nottinghamshire Live there were still flies swarming around her wheelie bin after she disposed of the cat food.

She said: "When I brought the bags into my kitchen, I noticed there were a lot of flies on my shopping. I unpacked the shopping and realised that there was a small hole in the box of cat food. I opened the box to see thousands of flies and maggots.

"More flies swarmed out which was terrifying. I immediately disposed of the box outside in my wheelie bin."

Flies infest woman's home

During the rest of the day flies continued to spread throughout her home bringing distress to her family.

She said: "During the day the flies continued to spread throughout my whole house. They were in every room bringing distress to myself and two daughters. They even managed to crawl inside other food packets that were in my living room.

"I have bought six cans of fly spray which has helped to some extent but the whole thing has been an absolute nightmare. My children are currently staying with friends whilst I try and get rid of the flies."

In addition to this Sally also noticed a large blue foreign body whilst emptying the pouch onto the cat food bowl.

She said: "After no response to my email, I phoned them and spoke to two people whilst holding for half an hour. Eventually they asked me if I would accept £20 worth of shopping vouchers - which I refused.

"After being put on hold for longer they said their final offer was £30 which I feel is totally unacceptable."

She added: "After two horrifying incidents happening in just one day I feel that (the supermarket) have serious issues that need to be addressed. I also feel that I should be compensated for this ordeal."

Nottinghamshire Live has contacted the supermarket for comment.
