Horror as man knifed in the back is rushed to hospital

A man has been stabbed in the back on a city street.

Police were called to Jermyn Street in Toxteth just before 9pm on Thursday evening.

Reports were made to cops about a fight in which a man, in his 40s, was knifed once to his back.

He was taken to hospital for what has been described as "non life-threatening injuries."

Officers detained a 47-year-old man at the scene, who was arrested on suspicion of Section 18 wounding.

He has been taken to a police station for questioning.

Detective Inspector Judith Blease, of Merseyside Police, said: "At this stage we are trying to piece together the circumstances of this incident, which thankfully didn't result in more serious injuries.

"Knife crime is a real concern for our communities and I want to reassure residents that we will be in the area today to carry out enquiries and speak to them."

"Tell us what you know, directly or anonymously, and we take positive action."

Forensic and witness enquiries are ongoing in the area today, with the immediate vicinity sealed off and police community support officers conducting house-to-house.
