'Horrific smell' as sinkhole opens up in Liverpool street

A sink hole with a "horrific smell" coming from it has opened up on on a south Liverpool street this morning.

Amid a second day of heavy rain and the continued impact of Storm Christoph, the hole has partially blocked off the road.

The hole in Aigburth, described as a "sink hole" by travel monitors INRIX, is causing disruption.

INRIX confirmed Ashbourne Road in Aigburth is "partially blocked due to a sink hole near A561 Aigburth Road."

Council and United Utilities teams are now investigating.

ECHO reader Jordan Kennie has flagged the hole to Liverpool Council on Twitter and he shared his picture after he saw the startling sight as he drove past this morning.

The 29-year-old, who is lead guitarist with Liverpool band The Boston Shakers said the hole, which he estimated being "a foot deep", had a "horrific" smell of sewerage and rotten eggs coming from it.

He said: "I didn't see any surface water, there was a horrific smell coming from it however.

"The hole goes probably a foot deep maybe?"

And he said someone had put a wheelie bin near it to alert motorists.

He said: "I saw a wheelie bin marking it at first to warn other drivers, but I needed to get to work and couldn't turn around unfortunately, so I just had to drive around it, which was quite difficult with cars parked either side, and hope for the best."

It is not clear if the sink hole is weather-related.

A Liverpool City Council spokesperson said: "“We have been made aware of the issue this morning and we now have a team on site, along with a team from United Utilities, to investigate and establish what repairs can be made.”

Storm Christoph has already closed several roads in the region on a second of three days of expected torrential rain.

East Midland Railway trains have been cancelled between Manchester Piccadilly and Liverpool Lime Street today.

Knowsley Lane in Stockbridge Village is closed in both directions due to flooding between Primrose Drive and Stockbridge Lane.

Gorsey Lane in Bold, St Helens is closed in both directions due to flooding from Neills Road (Bold) to Clay Lane (Burtonwood).

Lower Road is also closed in both directions closed due to flooding between Halebank Road (Halebank) and Greensbridge Lane (Halewood).

Vista Road in Newton-le-Willows is blocked and heavy traffic due to flooding between Lyme and B5209 / Makerfield Drive say travel monitors INRIX.

And Peasley Cross Lane in St Helens is closed due to flooding between A58 Parr Street (Peasley Cross) and the Totally Wicked Stadium.
