Horrible smell leaves town 'feeling sick' as they try to sleep

People in have said that a horrible smell left them "feeling sick" as they tried to sleep in their homes.

Neighbours in Higher Runcorn took to Facebook on Wednesday after smelling an "awful aroma" that was seeping into their homes. But the council has said they can't look into it as they haven't received any complaints.

One person said it smelt like ammonia and it became so bad they said they “had to shut my bedroom window it was making me feel sick”. Others described the mystery stink as “awful”.

On a separate social media page for nearby Weston Point, also Runcorn, a resident posted to complain about a “stench” in the early hours of Wednesday, which she described as so bad she “jumped up out of bed" because she though her house was "on fire".

Another Weston Point poster said their asthma was worse than usual and one grandparent said her young granddaughter “never stopped coughing” from 3am onwards. Speculation about the source of the smell or smells among residents has drifted towards nearby heavy industry, which occupies a vast crescent of land on Runcorn’s western flank and facing the Manchester Ship Canal and River Mersey.

Halton Borough Council told the ECHO it hadn’t received any complaints from the public about the issue and therefore couldn’t look into it. A Halton Council spokeswoman said: “We have had no complaints through to environmental health on this matter and so we can’t take it any further.”
