'Horrendous defending AGAIN' - Alan Shearer's verdict as Leicester City thrash Newcastle United

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has blamed "horrendous" defending again for costing his former side against Leicester City.

Brendan Rodgers' side ran out comfortable winners on Tyneside on Wednesday. Former Magpies Ayoze Perez and James Maddison were the beneficiaries of errors from Florian Lejeune in a nightmare spell before half-time.

Steve Bruce was also forced into making all three substitutions by the restart, with Javier Manquillo, Jetro Willems and Jonjo Shelvey all coming off with hamstring complaints.

And a minute after the restart, Fabian Schar was forced off with his own hamstring injury.

The second half became a procession as Leicester bossed possession against 10 men. Hamza Choudhury - who was booed by the home support for his challenge which has left Matt Ritchie sidelined since the Carabao Cup tie in August - grabbed his first goal for the club in the closing stages.

Bruce revealed following the game that substitute DeAndre Yedlin also suffered injury, completing the match with a broken hand.

Presenter and Foxes fan Gary Lineker took the opportunity to rub salt in the wounds of his BBC Sport colleague Shearer. Lineker tweeted the Magpies' record goal scorer to brag about the "comfortable victory".

Shearer responded by giving his verdict on the defeat, posting: "Yep brilliant from your team. Horrendous defending AGAIN cost the Toon."
