'Horrendous act': Hunt for golfers after ducklings found dead on course

The ACT Parks and Conservation Service is trying to identify a group of golfers who were at Gold Creek Country Club on Saturday after a mother duck and her ducklings were found dead on the course.

An investigation is underway into the deaths after rangers were alerted to an incident on the seventh hole about 5:30pm.

Another party of golfers said they witnessed a group of men attack the ducks.

The mother duck and two ducklings were found with severe injuries and appeared to have been crushed or hit.

Ranger Joel Patterson said they were hoping to learn more about what took place at the course that day, describing the incident as "horrendous".

A post to their Facebook page on Thursday called for information and led to outrage from the public.

Mr Patterson said it was unusual to hear of an attack of this nature against wildlife in the Canberra region.

"You do hear sometimes about bizarre or unexplainable acts like this but this one, there's just not reason for it, I can't get my head around it," he said.

"I think the outcry on social media certainly shows how bad it is.

"We'd just like to have a conversation with the public and ascertain who was involved — this was a horrendous act."

Under animal protection legislation, violent crimes against wildlife can lead to a fine of up to $32,000 or two years in jail, Mr Patterson said.

It is hoped social media will help locate those responsible.

"Canberra's quite a small place, so we're hoping to get as much information as we can," Mr Patterson said.
