Horizon Therapeutics said Tuesday it has purchased the massive three-building corporate site in Deerfield that Takeda Pharmaceuticals exited last year and plans to occupy it in the last half of 2020.
The 70-acre site is at Interstate 294 and Lake Cook Road. Horizon will relocate more than 500 employees from offices in Lake Forest. Terms of the sale, expected to close in the first quarter, were not revealed.
“We have experienced significant growth during the last three years including adding more than 200 employees in 2019,” said Horizon Chairman Timothy Walbert. “This new campus gives us the flexibility to accommodate our current employees as well as our anticipated long-term growth.”
Spokesman Geoffrey Curtis said Horizon, with more than 1,200 employees worldwide, expects to add 100 jobs in the Chicago area this year. He said the Deerfield move involves no state or local tax incentives.
Takeda’s departure cost the region about 1,000 jobs. The company consolidated U.S. operations near Boston following its $62 billion purchase of pharmaceutical company Shire.
