So Nick Clegg was forced to “carry the burden” and not allowed to resign (Front page, 25 June). What about those suffering the cuts and carrying the real “burden”? Did he or his party spare a thought for them?

• I trust that Tate Britain, having prevented pensioner Lorna Wright (Letters, 25 June) from entering its hallowed halls while wearing four badges, will now donate Sir Peter Blake’s 1961 Self-Portrait with Badges (which shows him wearing more than 30) to another museum? It would be quite inappropriate for the Tate to continue to profit from its presence, or indeed the sale of postcards or prints of this popular artwork, since it evidently disapproves so strongly of such controversial subject matter.

• It is true enough, as Oscar Sapper writes (Letters, 25 June), that the Confederate flag has historical associations with some vile things. But the same is true of many flags, not least the Stars and Stripes, and of course the union jack. Should they also be banned?

• One of the joys of having a letter printed in the Guardian (Letters, 24 June) is the phone call from Maryam letting me know that my letter is being considered for the next day’s paper. She is not disturbing my evening, as she seems to fear; she is making my week. It is a great thrill to be published, either in or out of the funny column, as all my friends will testify. It also helps to have an unusual name.
