Hopes 'rundown' area can be revived with plan for new houses

Plans to build four new semi-detached family homes have been welcomed by nearby residents used to seeing boarded up houses and smashed glass.

The site on Birkin Avenue, off Gregory Boulevard, Nottingham, is currently a car park and will be transformed into a residential development comprising of four semi-detached family houses.

Yousef Mohammed, 54, of Bridlington Street, says he is relieved it won't become student housing, but would like to see more independent shops.

He said: "It is a good area for a family, there is a park just down the road.

"It is a run down area, so hopefully they will feel safe.

"I would like to see a business there instead, a family-run one would be ideal for the area."

Iva Leir, 38, mother, from Hyson Green, supports the plans.

She said: "I think it is a good idea, we get so many students around here, it's good it won't be that.

"It also isn't that many houses, it's a nice amount, it isn't too much."

The agent, Liam Doherty Architects, will be handling the development.

A resident who wished to remain anonymous, who lives on Birkin Avenue, thinks the road could do with some more modern houses.

He said: "I think it'll be good, it isn't many.

"This road is really run down, some good modern houses could add to the area a bit.

"It will hopefully revive the street, it is quite rough here.

"The street used to be more busy but now there's nothing."
