'Hopefully he can be the guy' - Jamie Carragher identifies Liverpool transfer 'problem'

Jamie Carragher believes that Liverpool's summer transfer problem is bringing in quality rather than quantity as Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United splash the cash around them.

The former Reds defender added that he'd like to see the squad bolstered in the attacking department with a player "who can get goals".

Liverpool's rivals have been busy announcing big-money signings with the Arsenal signing Ben White for £50m and Manchester United welcoming Raphael Varane just weeks after signing Jadon Sancho.

Now a pundit for Sky Sports, Carragher wants to see the Reds add another goalscorer to their side.

And the 43-year-old has high hopes for winger Sadio Mane who, by his own standards, had a below-average season as Klopp's side recovered to finish third after a run of form after Christmas.

"I think in terms of numbers it’s not a problem, I think it is in terms of quality," Carragher said.

"If we didn’t bring in another addition it may be difficult to knock Man City off the top, and let’s not forget Chelsea, the European champions, and Manchester United, who have had a great window with (Raphael) Varane and (Jadon) Sancho.

"I’d like to see someone who could get goals, whether that’s from midfield or part of the front three.

"I am just wary a little bit with Liverpool, after last season going into this season, as to whether there are enough goals in the team for them to go and win the title.

"But I am expecting a big season from (Sadio) Mane. He didn’t have his best season but he’s looking really sharp in pre-season, hopefully he can be the guy who can plug that gap in terms of goals."

Liverpool's trip to Carrow Road is just two weeks away with the curtain-raiser seemingly coming too soon for returning centre-backs Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez. Ibrahima Konate could be the only new face should he start.

Jordan Henderson, Roberto Firmino, Fabinho and Alisson Becker are all set to return to the fold in the coming days but will need to get up to speed reasonably quickly otherwise as Carragher suggested additional quality is needed.
