Hope Street in Glasgow sees biggest drop in air pollution levels in UK amid lockdown

Hope Street in Glasgow has seen the biggest drop in air pollution levels in the UK during the coronavirus lockdown.

The street, which was revealed as the most polluted in Scotland back in January, has had the biggest air quality improvement of any in the country, BBC Scotland reports.

Nitrogen dioxide levels on the city centre street, which runs by Glasgow Central Station, have fallen from 56.6 micrograms per cubic metre to 18.7.

The study was conducted by environmental consultancy Ricardo, who analysed pollution levels from 32 sites in the UK and compared them against 'normal' figures.

Among the other streets to feature on the list of having had the biggest improvements in air quality are Nicholson Street in Edinburgh and Marylebone Road in London.

In the wake of the study, Councillor Anna Richardson, Glasgow city convener for sustainability and carbon reduction, told BBC Scotland: "The link between vehicle traffic and pollution is well understood and there has been an obvious reduction in vehicles moving around the city during lockdown.

"Making sure the gain in air quality made in recent months is not lost is part of the considerable challenge the council faces as we emerge from the Covid-19 crisis."
