Hope for Glasgow's young - in the week 25/11/10

Young people: A new £7 million project will create 1,000 jobs for Glasgow's young unemployed, reports The Herald. Unveiled at last week's State of the City conference, the Commonwealth Jobs Fund will target 18-to-24 year olds who have been out of work for more than six months and follows on from the success of the Commonwealth Apprenticeship Initiative, which has provided work placements for hundreds of school-leavers.

Manufacturing: The manufacturing industry is due a huge surge in job creation, according to a study from the Engineering Employers Federation. The survey of 300 firms found that most are planning investment in staff as output from its factories grows as its fastest rate since 1994, This Is Money reports.

Leisure: Bookmakers Paddy Power are planning an expansion that will see 1,440 new jobs created in the UK, Ireland and Australia over the next few years. At least 500 jobs will be created at the company's head office in West Dublin alone, reports ITN, welcome news for a country facing the reality of a European bail-out from its current debt-crisis. A further 810 jobs will open up in the UK at news Paddy Power retail outlets.

Green: A Lincolnshire recycling firm whose factory was gutted by fire has unveiled a replacement £13 million plant and plans to create 75 new jobs in the area. AWS Eco Plastics near Gainsborough, has built facilities that, once up and running, will process two billion plastic bottles per year, This is Lincolnshire reveals. The 10-year-old company already employs 110 people and anticipates further growth as demand for low-carbon food and drink packaging increases.

Construction: A new North Sea oil platform is likely to provide 1,000 jobs over the next two years, Randstad recruitment estimates. Offshore Group Newcastle have won a contract worth £150 million to build the rig, which will be designed and constructed on a 75 acre site in Wallsend, Tyneside. The firm is looking to recruit local welders, platers, riggers and electricians and up to 80 per cent of materials used will also be sourced from the UK.

Retail: Supermarket firm Morrisons hopes to create 400 jobs if plans for a new superstore in Kent go ahead. The retail firm has joined forces with Essential Land to redevelop the former Sittingbourne Paper Mill site with a 72,000 sq foot store, according to Kent Online.
