Hope for Coronation Street's Yasmeen as the date for her trial is announced

Coronation Street's Yasmeen Metcalfe might be shrinking behind bars - as her worried granddaughter Alya has pointed out - but her spirit hasn't been crushed.

Alya went to see her gran in prison to update her with some news about her upcoming trial for the attempted murder of her husband Geoff.

After being suspended in July after Yasmeen collapsed, the trial has now been set for December 2.

"We've got a trial date. December 2," Alya told her.

Seeing her gran's downcast expression, Alya reassured her that it wasn't long to wait and reassured her that she would walk away a free woman after acting in self defence against vile Geoff's bullying behaviour.

"It's weeks away," Alya told her.

"You could be free."

Supportive Alya bolstered her gran by reassuring her that people will believe her argument that Geoff had subjected her to months of abuse behind closed doors.

"People have confidence in what you have to say," she said.

And she told her that solicitor Imran Habeeb won't stop looking for Geoff's ex wife Elaine who mysteriously disappeared in August after telling Yasmeen she would speak out at her trial.

She was horrified to come face to face with Geoff on the cobbles before disappearing.

"Imran won't stop looking for her. We're going to track Elaine down," said Alya.

And she made a worried Yasmeen feel better as she said: "You've got truth on your side and when you won you're going to be free of Geoff for the rest of your life."

Last month Geoff, played by Ian Bartholomew, was finally unmasked as an abuser after his son Tim's partner Sally Webster took his laptop containing CCTV footage of him abusing his wife.

With his granddaughter Faye’s help Sally downloaded the CCTV footage.

In powerful Coronation Street scenes Tim finally saw through his lies and raged at his dad over his behaviour.

In May Yasmeen lashed out and slashed Geoff in the neck with a broken wine bottle after he forced her to wear a racy dress to the pub, which was bought for one of his escorts.

Back at home he threw chips at her with a torrent of verbal abuse as she cowered. Geoff pretended Yasmeen had been abusing him.

Corrie senior storyliner Amy Coombs previously said the soap wanted to show with this storyline that domestic abuse doesn't have to just be physical.

It was announced last June that the soap was to explore the disturbing effects of coercive control relationships.

Since 2015 this form of abuse has been classed as a criminal offence and underpins 95 per cent of all abusive relationships.
