'Hope Barton knows what he's doing' – Bristol Rovers fans upset as Mansell and four staff depart

The departures of five senior members of staff have been confirmed by Bristol Rovers, but supporters' focus has been on only one man: Lee Mansell.

The hero of the Conference play-off final win in 2015 has left his development squad manager role amid a series of exits on Wednesday.

The club have also confirmed first-team coach Jack Mesure, goalkeeping coach David Coles, head of medical services Miles Warren and head of sports science Alun Andrews have left the club.

Gasheads were expecting a thorough overhaul this summer under Joey Barton after the club were relegated to League Two, but the departure of Mansell in particular has prompted upset and questions from the fanbase.

Mansell joined Rovers in 2014 and made 81 appearances for the Gas across three seasons, and his heroics from the penalty spot at Wembley in 2015 to secure promotion have secured his legend status at the club.

He retired in 2017 to take up a coaching role working with the club's under-23s, but his seven-year association with Rovers is over and supporters have had plenty to say on his departure.

Mark Scudamore: "Upset at this news, a true Gashead, hope JB knows what he's doing."

Stephen Endicott: "Going to be interesting to see who they bring in, Joey and his team come as a package and last thing club want in future is to have to replace everyone at once if/when Joey leaves."

Clive: "We had better get off to a flyer next season."

Nick Turner: "We all love Mansell but there is no sentiment required by JB. If he’s in charge he has the right to do things his way and he will therefore take responsibility for it."

Charlie Hayne: "No way absolutely gutted about that, best of luck. Such a great bloke, quality player and an absolute legend"

Tom Butler: "What a shame Manse has given so much to the club and will never be forgotten by the fans and just for that goal."

Harry: "Gas legend, bought me one of my best moments as a Gashead. Best of luck Manse."

John Mills: "The club has been run on sentiment for too long. It's a shame for Mansell but changes are necessary."

Ray Jones: "If Lee has been forced out by Joey then this will certainly annoy and trouble many of us fans."

Andy: "You will forever remain a Bristol Rovers legend Manse. Thanks for all that you’ve done. Good luck for the next challenge."

Mancgas: "Explanation re Mansell is required..... on the face of it absolute nonsensical. Why is he going and who made decision?"

Greg Hammick: "Why has Lee Mansell been let go? The man is a club legend and deserves a lot more than a passing note on a throwaway statement bundled in amongst a load of other staff members who have only been here for a year! Really not sure about what’s going on at our club at the moment..."

Ady Coles: "Unbelievable that we let Lee Mansell go, his attitude, character and leadership was at the heart of the clubs revival from non league to League 1. This is the type of bloke that we need at Rovers, very sad day!"

Former Rovers favourites Ollie Clarke, now of Mansfield, and Lee Brown, at Portsmouth, were also in agreement on Twitter, responding to the club's official announcement.

Brown wrote: "Sad day how they have let this man go", with Clarke then replying: "Shocking decision Lee".
