Honoured again: Newsroom’s podcasts ‘The Detail’ and ‘Diagnosis of a Crime’

For the third year in a row, The Detail, has won best News and Current Affairs podcast at the national awards.

The podcast is produced by Newsroom for RNZ and is partially funded by New Zealand on Air.

This year’s winning entry Funding a Good Death was presented by The Detail’s producer, Alexia Russell.

It examined the Government’s proposal to axe the only two jobs in New Zealand’s health sector focusing on a national strategy for palliative care, and the tussle for cash between those who want terminally ill patients to live well before they die; and those who want to give them the option of dying earlier.

It was well received by many in the healthcare industry, many of whom described it as “nuanced”.

Russell thanked her team of Sharon Brettkelly, Amanda Gillies, Gwen McClure, Charlyse Tansey, Davina Zimmer and the RNZ audio engineers who “ add the polish to our podcast audio.”

“Now in our eighth year, The Detail has established its credentials enough to inspire confidence in a wide range of top experts willing to talk to us about their specialist areas. It’s a privilege to meet and interview so many amazing New Zealanders in the course of our working days.” says Russell.

Newsroom’s Investigates podcast Fractured 2 was a finalist in this category alongside Context (RNZ) and Front Page(NZ Herald).

Our Investigations team, headed by editor Melanie Reid, won best True Crime podcast with Diagnosis of a Crime. It follows their success at the recent NZ Media Awards where they won Best Podcast.

The second series of Diagnosis of a Crime is currently the number one podcast in New Zealand on Apple.

Reid and her team, including Bonnie Sumner, Dave Filoiali’i and Judith Curran have carried out a multi-year investigation into the way non-accidental injuries in children are diagnosed in New Zealand and the lack of justice for innocent parents accused of causing them.

Reid thanked New Zealand on Air for helping fund years of difficult investigative work.

“This type of work takes a lot of resource and time. Without public funding we wouldn’t be able to do it and that would mean a lot of families would be denied access to justice.

“In the podcasts we show what happens when medical evidence from New Zealand doctors – usually left unchallenged – is finally put to the test. It is terrible what some of these families and their children have been put through.

“I also want to thank the people who subscribe to Delve (Reid’s podcasts sit under this brand on Apple and Spotify) because they also support us financially which helps us do this work.”

The other finalists in the True Crime section were A Moment in Crime (NZ Herald), Nark (RNZ and Mike Wesley-Smith) and Mr Asia (NZ Herald and Bird of Paradise Productions).

The rise of podcasting in the media world was recognised with 16 separate categories in this year’s awards.

Best Independent Podcast was won by Grey Areas with Petra Bagust and best overall podcast went to Between Two Beers.

Best journalist went to Sam Sherwood. The RNZ reporter is on a roll. He was the winner of three leading categories, including Reporter of the Year, at the NZ media awards.

Network Station of the Year was won by Newstalk ZB for a record sixth consecutive time.

Heather du Plessis-Allan was the Sir Paul Holmes Broadcaster of the Year and Radio Broadcasters Association chair Jana Rangooni was acknowledged with an Outstanding Contribution to Radio award. Rangooni has worked in radio since she left university in 1987.
