April 18--An alderman has proposed honoring "Jane the Virgin" star Gina Rodriguez by calling the Northwest Side block she grew up on "Honorary Gina Rodriguez Way."
Ald. Gilbert Villegas (36th) proposed the honorary designation for the 2300 block of North Keating Avenue last week. Justin Heath, the alderman's director of policy, said he expects there will be a ceremony in September if the city council passes the measure.
Heath said Villegas learned Rodriguez grew up in the Belmont Cragin community during his 2015 campaign, and the alderman has watched "Jane the Virgin," which premiered in 2014. The Rodriguez family recently moved from the block to California, Heath said.

Rodriguez, 31, attended New York University. She won the Golden Globe for best TV actress in a comedy last year for her "Jane the Virgin" role and was nominated again for the 2016 award, which went to "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" star Rachel Bloom.
Rodriguez is slated to appear in "Deepwater Horizon," an upcoming drama based on the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon rig explosion and oil spill. The film, which also stars Mark Wahlberg and Kate Hudson, is due out Sept. 30.
