Hong Kong to Relax Restrictions on Travel From Mainland in Mid-May

What’s new: The Hong Kong government plans to relax travel restrictions and allow Chinese mainland residents to enter the special administrative region without being subject to 14-day mandatory quarantine upon arrival, according to the city’s Chief Executive Carrie Lam.

At a press conference on Monday, Lam said the change will take place in mid-May and travelers will not be required to provide any certificates of Covid-19 vaccination. The local government has not released details of the plan.

The background: The announcement came as Hong Kong health authorities have largely contained the fourth outbreak of the virus in the 7-million-strong region.

Currently, only Hong Kong permanent residents traveling from neighboring Guangdong province and the Macao Special Administrative Region are allowed to enter the city without quarantining.
